But often time away (and rest) is exactly what I need to come back with the objectivity and fresh mind needed. I find part of the reason I “code when I sleep” is I have some lingering logic I have to solve for. Let something be finished! If you get stuck on something and you are spinning your wheels, move on to something easy you can finish for the day. In general - it’s solid advice to get offline, get away from screens for the hours before you sleep and you’ll sleep better.Īlso - I find it important that I don’t overwork a feature of problem. I cook, play music, read a book, meditate, or get some exercise. ![]() In that time I need to be doing other things that interest me, but are casual. It’s called rumination, and it can really mess with your sleep, so I feel you.įor me, the primary solution is to make sure there is a solid block of time between when I stop coding and when I sleep - like, 5-7 hours.
